"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: The sender also longs to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are not alone. Several famous admirers have publicly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a close unit. Their videos frequently show them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to start a band."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Milestone

The band have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The album came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics track breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

But the sister act will consistently be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
